Ice Rescue Drill- Hosted by Berlin VFD - Station 600 & Decatur Farms
Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Tonight Berlin Fire Department graciously invited local departments to attend an Ice Rescue Drill instructed by Eric Budd, Bill Tilghman, and Dell Baker. Members from Ocean Pines, Ocean City, Showell, and Berlin met at station 600 for a powerpoint overviewing the basics of ice water rescue. After the powerpoint, Eric Budd gave a lecture in the engine bay explaining the uses of each tool, focusing mainly on the "Rescue Alive" Tool, which used a pontoon-type device to 'ski' across ice, and float across water to safely reach a victim trapped in ice. Once the equipment was explained, members left Station 600 and met at a pond in Decatur Farms, where the main part of the drill was held. As shown in the photos, members were given the chance to put on proper rescue gear, and test out the equipment. Mr Dell Baker played the role of a victim in the ice, as various firefighters used the Rescue Alive tool to pull him to safety. Our department would like to thank Berlin Fire Department for another spectacular drill as well as Mr. Dell Baker and the other Ocean City members who assisted in the lectures.
